Skin Lesion / Scar Revision Post-Procedure Instructions

  • If you have small tape (Steri-Strips) over your incision, keep those in place until your follow up appointment. If they fall off they can be replaced with a small bandage or paper tape.

  • If ointment was placed on your incision, continue applying Vaseline to the incision 3-4 times per day to keep the area moist until seen by Dr. Mo. Just a glisten of ointment is all you need.

  • Shower or cleanse the incision with soap and water daily. From a new jar, you should apply Vaseline ointment to the incision two to three times a day, just enough to keep the incision moist. Do NOT apply Vaseline near the eyes.

  • If there is a scab or crust on the incision, clean the incision using a Q-tip dipped in a mixture of equal parts hydrogen peroxide and tap water.

  • If there is no scab or crust, you should not use this hydrogen peroxide mixture. Only apply the Vaseline after cleaning the wound.

  • Bandages are usually needed for areas under clothes, in part to protect your clothes from the ointment that is applied to the incision. For areas on the head or neck, bandages are not needed unless you prefer to use them.

Sutures

  • If there are sutures on the skin, blue or black, they will need to be removed 5-14 days after the procedure. The timing of removing these sutures depends upon the location of the incision on your body.

  • If all absorbable sutures were used those will not need to be removed.

Activity

  • Avoid lifting anything heavy or strenuous activity for at least 2 weeks following your procedure.

  • Avoid activities that pull or stretch the incision.

  • You may shower the day after your procedure. It is ok to let water and soap run over the incisions / tape and pat dry after. Do not scrub the incisions.

  • Do not submerge the incision in water (bathtub, hot-tub, swimming pool) until the incision is completely healed.

Pain

  • You may also take Tylenol or Ibuprofen as needed for mild pain.

  • If you need stronger pain relief you may take the prescription pain medication.

  • You may apply cold compresses to the affected area for 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off to help with pain and swelling.

Scars

  • The tape on your incision is acting as scar tape for the first 4 weeks and will help reduce the appearance of a scar.

  • After 4 weeks you can massage the scar to help break up scar tissue.

  • At the 4 week mark, you can also use silicone sheets (available online) over the scar to improve the appearance. You need to wear them at least 20 hours a day for a few months for them to be effective.

Medication & Comfort

  • You should take the scheduled tylenol, gabapentin, and celecoxib for pain relief as prescribed. Breakthrough pain with the opiate medications.

  • Pain medications may cause drowsiness, upset stomach, and constipation.

  • Take pain medications with food.

  • Do not drink alcohol or drive while taking prescribed pain medication.

  • Refills are only available during office hours – 9am to 5pm, Monday through Friday. If you feel you need more pain medication, please call during those times.
